00400		The number of people is growing who believe that
00500	technology is, on the whole, bad for mankind.  There is an even
00600	larger number with the less extreme view that curbing
00700	runaway technology is one of the main problems facing humanity.
00800	Like most scientists and engineers, I think this view is wrong
00900	and that, on the contrary, the solution of humanities problems
01000	is possible only on the basis of even more technology than we
01100	have.  If the anti-technologists had there way, mankind would
01200	face a period of stagnation and suffering.  The
01300	most I will concede to their point of view is that some
01400	worthwhile applications  of technology have had bad
01500	side-effects, in almost no instance outweighing the main good
01600	of the development, that these side-effects require correction,
01700	and that a higher standard of avoidance of bad side-effects
01800	than has prevailed in the past is now feasible and should
01900	be required.  I must also concede that ferreting out these side-
02000	effects and demanding their correction has often gone hand-in-hand
02100	with anti-technological views.
